  • Bonus Cocktail: The Chartreuse Swizzle

    March 30, 2012

Sometimes it’s fun to just follow the muse. I stumbled on the Chartreuse Swizzle at the excellent tiki cocktail blog “A Mountain of Crushed Ice”. It is a tiki cocktail blog, written by Helena “Tiare” Olsen a Swede who is in love with New Orleans and tiki cocktails. The world is indeed becoming smaller. The blog is full of joy, passion and great cocktail recipes. I’ve become an instant fan.

I found this recipe and was immediately smitten. I have been enjoying Chartreuse in Last Word cocktails, and this drink seemed too fun not to try. The drink features green Chartreuse, aged rum, pineapple, lime, falernum and bitters- all good stuff. The suggested caramelized lime garnish is way over the top, but this is a tiki drink, so why not?

The drink is great, with the full range of “tiki” flavors but some extra complexity from the Chartreuse. Tiki drinks are all about flavors that seem exotic and hard to pin down- this drink certainly has that. We had our neighbor, Jeni over to test the drink and she liked it as well. The Chartreuse keeps the drink from being too sweet or cloying at the finish, but it is still very much a tiki drink.

I thoroughly enjoyed making this cocktail, even though it was a bit or work. (Ok, I did end up using the broiler to fully caramelize the lime- but whatever, it worked). Something about fire and tiki drinks seems fitting. The Chartreuse Swizzle will certainly be a good conversation starter.  Continue reading →

  • Weekly Cocktail #8: The Baroque

    The Baroque Cocktail

Let’s get right to the point. The Baroque is a cocktail with rum and gin. And it’s good. And if your first thought was “rum and gin together, that’s nasty”, I wouldn’t be surprised. But this combination works very, very well. I stumbled across this drink at the excellent cocktail blog A Dash of Bitters. If you like cocktails (and good writing) you should check it out.

In any event, I do not often think about combining rum with gin, it seems like wearing flip-flops when you are in a Tuxedo. But as I found with last week’s cocktail The Last Word, sometimes what sounds like a train wreck is quite good, you just need to try it. Continue reading →

  • A Wall of Bitters Makes a Cocktail Better

    March 21, 2012

    Oh, the glory...and the cocktails...

Wow. My awesome sister in NYC just sent me this pic of a wall full of bitters at a specialty store (and yes, I am sometimes jealous of all the cool stuff back in my birthplace). What are bitters? These are the accents that make a good cocktail great. I will not (and cannot) explain how bitters are made, but you need these. Bitters are not expensive, and as most cocktails just use a dash or two, bitters will last forever.

And bitters are a necessity of good mixology. If you have a few types of bitters, a few bottles of booze, citrus, sugar and the internet- you have 200+ excellent cocktails on hand. Easy. No crazy infusions, no special tricks, just great drinks. Right now we have Angostura, Peychauds, Fee Brothers Lemon and Fee Brothers Orange Bitters in our bar. This is a good start, and all for about $20. Go get some, most liquor stores will have what you need. Continue reading →

  • Weekly Cocktail #7: The Last Word

This is a good green cocktail. Seriously, try it.

Well, St. Patrick’s Day is coming, and despite being contrived and hokey, I have been researching green cocktails. But I was looking (praying?) for a green drink that was not artificially green, minty or nasty. A search for St. Patrick’s day cocktails did not really solve the problem, in fact it was pretty depressing. So I figured that I would approach the problem backwards and look for a decent green ingredient and build from there.

That led me pretty quickly to Chartueuse, another of those strong, medicinal European liqueurs that pop up in many traditional cocktails. Chartreuse is made in France by Carthusian Monks (gotta love the French, even the monks). Made from a secret formula with the extracts from over 130 plants, Chartreuse is, not surprisingly, green. It is strong stuff (100 proof), sweet and features intense herbal flavors. I would not drink this stuff straight. And Chartreuse isn’t cheap either, at about 30 bucks for a small bottle. But I made the plunge and bought some, figuring it will last a while. And I am glad I did, because I got to make this week’s drink, the Last Word, and it is good, real good. Continue reading →

No, I don’t just drink all day (but one can dream). And there are more food recipes coming, they just take longer. But while researching one cocktail I often find another, and this one solved a problem, so I had to post it.

The problem is Campari. You know, the super bitter stuff in the back of your liquor cabinet. The medicinal ingredient that mixologists can’t keep out of an otherwise tasty drink. The stuff that keeps those nasty Negronis on all of the trendiest cocktail menus. The stuff that tastes so bad it’s “cool” to drink. Hey, Italians and hipsters drink it so it must be cool.

But I rant, my apologies. As you might guess, Campari can be a polarizing ingredient. As with many ingredients that people “learn to love”, Campari’s proponents can get pretty religious. The rest of us just shrug and wait for the enlightenment that may never come, and meanwhile we will drink things that, you know, taste good. Continue reading →

  • Weekly Cocktail #6: The Moscow Mule

    March 9, 2012

Look, the lime is smiling. The drink must be good.

There is a great bar / gastropub called Martin’s West a few miles from Putney Farm. They have a strong beer and scotch program, but also feature high-quality, creative, seasonal cocktails. The cocktails are a real treat and we try and stop by every month or so to see what is new. But there is one constant on the cocktail menu at Martin’s West, the Moscow Mule. I suspect that our friends at Martin’s did not expect (or want) to feature the Mule forever, but we always see them up and down the bar. The Mule is just too popular to take off the menu.
